Nifty Mac tip of the month

July 2010

This month we are going to teach you how to take photograph of whatever is on your screen: this is called a screenshot. You may want to do this to document the evolution of an artwork, or keep a record of a bank transfer, or just show your friends how many windows you have open!

It's pretty easy, but it involves holding down three keys at once. To take a screenshot of the entire display, hold down Command and Shift then press the 3 key. You can also take a screenshot of a certain area on your screen, simply hold down Command and Shift and press the 4 key – a target symbol will appear on your screen where your mouse arrow was before. Click where you want the screenshot area to start and, holding the clicker down, drag the grey box that will appear over the area you want a screen shot of, and let it go. The screen shot will be automatically saved on your desktop. From there you can double click it to view in Preview, print it, or drag and drop it to an email to share.

This month's tip is about how to use the Faces feature of iPhoto '09.

Faces is a really quick way to find all photos of a loved one. Just select a photo, then click the Name button and type the name of the person in that photo. Then select Faces on the iPhoto sidebar to see your Mac's guess at other photos containing that person. The more you correct its guesses, the better iPhoto becomes at guessing Faces.

This months very simple Mac Tip could be a huge help to any iPod or iPhone user having trouble with their device. If your iPod or iPhone starts playing up, it is very likely it can be simply fixed by a Restore. To perform a Restore, plug in your iPod or iPhone, and iTunes should open automatically. Your iPhone or iPod should show up in the left sidebar in iTunes. Click on it and you will be taken to your device's main screen. Simply click the Restore button, and then wait while the iPod is restored. If that doesn't fix your issue, and it's still under warranty, you can bring your iPod into the shop to have it replaced. For iPhone, contact Apple Customer Support on 1300 321 456.

Remember that when you restore an iPod or iPhone, all the applications, music and videos will be erased. They should be backed up in iTunes, and can just be transferred back after the restore. Apple will let you sync your iPod or Phone with only one computer. You can however sync multiple devices with a single Mac. If you have files stored on a second computer, just transfer them to the computer using a USB stick, CD or DVD.

Our Mac tip this month is one I use almost daily. It's called 'To Do's' and is great for reminding you of things you have to follow up on that have been emailed to you. In an email, click and drag to select the text you want to be on your To Do list, then either click the To Do button (it's the yellow tick at the top right of the Mail window) or right click. All To Do's show up in the left hand sidebar of Mail, as well as in your iCal.

This month's Mac tip is how to share a screen, or access files on another Mac that is on your local network (ie. sharing the internet in the same location). In Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and above, the sidebar of every Finder window contains a list of all other computers on your network under the heading "Shared", click on one, then type in its username and password (not yours). Then you can select 'Share Screen' to drive the other Mac remotely, or 'Connect As' to access files.

Website of the month

Engrish.com is one of the funniest websites I have ever come across. Engrish refers to unusual English originating in East Asian countries. Engrish.com is a site that collects unintentionally humorous examples of Engrish depicted in photographs of businesses, advertisements and other things.

Dirt Girl World is a local success story, the creators live not far from here and have made a TV series that is an international hit. Congrats to all involved.

Featured product of the month

We're big fans of STM bags and backpacks, because of their good old fashioned quality. Alex has had an STM laptop backpack for 5 years which hasn't dropped a stitch. This Australian owned (and made) company makes all kinds of carry cases, but the one we're showcasing is the STM Jacket for the iPad. The Jacket comes with a removable shoulder strap, or you can carry it in your hand. It's small enough to fit into your laptop bag or backpack, and it has an extra compartment for your wallet, iPhone or iPod - it looks really good too. We have them in stock and they sell for $69.00.
